Not in My Lifetime
I began working on this documentary just after marriage equality passed in my state of Minnesota. The people voted and we won! It was so exciting, but it was also a little bitter sweet, come on, I was in my fifties, and single. Thus began my quest to explore the impact of marriage equality legislation on myself, and my peers.
"When are you getting married?" became the friendly mantra directed at the already partnered. And that is exactly what many have done, loudly and quietly. We got married.
But for other boomers and beyond, freedom from marriage was the hallmark of our gay identity. And for some lesbians, the feminist teachings of our past continue to taint perceptions of marriage, the institution. For transgender people, marriage equality legislation allows the collective energy to refocus. Potentially to trans issues where hatred and discrimination continue to run amok.
I'm exploring all of these intersections. I'm also taking this historic moment to talk about growing up queer and the messages coming from the radio and television of my childhood. It's an interesting story of perseverance, acceptance and the freedom to choose, told with grace and humor.
